Aiken Celebrates Scholarship Winners
The Rotary Club of Aiken awarded 25 scholarships totaling an all-time high of $187,500 during a luncheon held on May 5, 2025, at Newberry Hall. Among the recipients were twins Lawrence and Logan Valdez, seniors from Midland Valley High School, who each received a scholarship of $7,500.
The Valdez twins plan to pursue their education at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) with an intention to major in mechanical engineering. Lawrence aims to complement his engineering studies with a minor in finance and/or business, while Logan has expressed a keen interest in delving into mechatronics, a field that integrates mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science.
In addition to their academic pursuits, both twins currently work at the QuickTrip convenience store in Graniteville, continuing their employment history that includes a prior position at Wingstop in North Augusta. Their strong work ethic is influenced significantly by their father, who, despite not completing high school, has always encouraged them to strive for excellence in their studies.
This year, the Rotary Club received a record 123 viable applications for the scholarship program, which is designated for seniors residing in or attending schools within the Aiken County Public School District’s Area 1. The scholarships are a vital part of the Rotary Club’s contribution to educational advancement in the community.
The funding for this year’s scholarships was bolstered significantly by contributions from the family of the late Gary and Virginia Albrecht, who donated $100,000 to the scholarship fund. The Rotary Club also played a crucial role by contributing an additional $52,000 to help support local students in their educational endeavors.
In addition to the Valdez twins, other scholarship winners hailed from various local institutions. Students from Aiken High School included Jasmine Battle and Joaquin Beltan, while the Aiken Scholars Academy saw recipients such as Kyla Decker and Brandon Enlund. Awards were also given to students from Silver Bluff High School and South Aiken High School, showcasing a broad range of talented individuals who are set to make significant contributions to their communities in the future.
The Rotary Club of Aiken’s scholarship program aims to invest in the future of local students by providing financial assistance for their post-secondary education. With a continued commitment to supporting youth education, the Rotary Club helps ensure that deserving students have the resources needed to succeed and achieve their academic and career aspirations.
This recognition of outstanding students underscores the dedication of the Aiken community to fostering educational opportunities and enhancing the future workforce prepared to tackle modern challenges across various fields of study.
