AIKEN, S.C. — Christy Spradley, a Midland Valley graduate making her first run for office, has won the District 6 seat on the Aiken County Board of Education in a race where neither she nor the incumbent appeared on the ballot.

County election officials declared the result on Nov. 4, after counting showed Spradley with 674 write-in votes, while trustee Liz Morris finished with 499.

Write-ins in the contest totaled 1,397. Of those, 728 came in on Election Day, 662 were cast during early voting and seven arrived by absentee ballot.

Morris ended up off the ballot when her nominating petition fell short. County school board hopefuls need 50 signatures from registered voters who live in the district. Her campaign turned in 122, but 80 came from people outside the district, nine from people not registered to vote and one lacked a signature.

Morris had held the seat for about two years. She won it in a special election on Nov. 12, 2024, defeating Jim Oremus by 96 votes after Dwight Smith resigned.

District 6 covers Attendance Area Three of the Aiken County Public School District, which takes in much of the Midland Valley area. Spradley spent nine years as a PTO volunteer at an elementary school before deciding to run about a month before the election.
