AIKEN, S.C. — S.C. State Credit Union is adding a second branch in Aiken, on the city’s Southside. Crews have begun clearing and grading a lot along Whiskey Road in front of Lowes Foods, close to where Whiskey meets Powderhouse Road.

Credit union president and CEO Jim Kinard said the branch will open with a staff of five, and he expects construction to take 10 to 12 months. The new building will follow the standard layout of the credit union’s recent branches and will be larger than its current Aiken office at 190 Beaufort St. NE, which was remodeled not long ago.

The lot is too tight for a traditional drive-through, Kinard said, so the branch will offer two interactive teller machines staffed by a live employee during regular hours. Members will be able to handle nearly any transaction there except getting a cashier’s check.

County property records show the credit union bought the 1.63-acre parcel in February for $1,487,000. The site sits at The Junction Shopping Center, where Lowes Foods opened as the anchor in July 2024. An entrance road will separate the branch from a Valvoline Instant Oil Change that also faces Whiskey Road.

Founded in 1952 and based in Columbia, the credit union counts more than 100,000 members, and the Aiken addition will be its 21st branch. Its existing offices include four in Columbia plus locations in Anderson, Lexington, North Charleston, Orangeburg, Greenville and Seneca. Federal insurance covers member deposits for at least $250,000.
