AIKEN, S.C. — Aiken County Deputy Ethan Crosby went home Friday after finishing his stay at Aiken Regional Rehabilitation, almost four weeks after a suspect shot him and then drove over him with a pickup.

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office called his release a tremendous milestone and asked residents to keep praying for the deputy and his family as his recovery goes on at home. Crosby joined the agency in August 2025, so he had been on the job a little over a year when he was hurt.

The Oct. 5 confrontation began with a hit-and-run in which a gray Chevrolet truck struck a convenience store. Deputies traced the truck to a woman living on Scotch Lane, and when she pulled up there she hit a patrol car and drove away. After a short chase she opened her door, fired at a deputy and ran him over before deputies shot back.

The Aiken County Coroner’s Office identified the driver as Amanda Buckner, 38, who died at the hospital. The chase ended near Corry Lane and Powell Pond Road, not far from the Battle of Aiken reenactment grounds off Interstate 20 Exit 18.

Crosby spent several days in the hospital before moving to rehab. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting at the sheriff’s office request and has not released further findings.
