AIKEN, S.C. — Three people have been arrested after an Aiken County deputy was shot while chasing a man on foot following a traffic stop late Wednesday, Aiken County Sheriff Marty Sawyer said at a Friday briefing.

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office identified the wounded deputy as Preston Metts. Sawyer said Metts has come through two surgeries and will need more.

The stop took place on Shiloh Heights Road. Investigators said a passenger got out of the car and ran, and the deputy was hit by gunfire during the pursuit.

Officers in Jacksonville, Fla., caught up with Morris Dorch, who will be charged with attempted murder after he is brought back to Aiken County. Leviel Priester, located in Lexington County, faces an accessory-after-the-fact count, and Teondra Coleman stands accused of misprision of a felony, the crime of concealing a felony from authorities.

Sawyer said many details are being held back while the investigation continues. Prosecution falls to the 2nd Circuit solicitor’s office, which prosecutes criminal cases in Aiken, Bamberg and Barnwell counties.
