AIKEN, S.C. — An Aiken County Sheriff’s Office deputy was recovering Thursday after being shot several times when a late-night traffic stop near Edgefield Highway and Shiloh Heights Road turned into a foot chase.

The stop happened around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday. Deputies said one person got out of the stopped car and ran, and the deputy who followed on foot was hit by gunfire during the pursuit. Authorities have not identified the wounded deputy, who was rushed across the river to Augusta for surgery and was listed as stable by Thursday morning.

Deputies asked the public to watch for a silver or gray Hyundai carrying a South Carolina tag. That vehicle was located early Thursday. No description of the shooter has been made public, and the sheriff’s office said it did not believe the suspect was still near the scene.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division took over the case, which is routine when officers are involved in a shooting. Officers from the Aiken Department of Public Safety and the North Augusta Department of Public Safety also responded.

It is the fourth shooting involving Aiken County deputies in 2026, out of 36 involving officers across South Carolina this year. No one has been charged. Any charges would go to the 2nd Circuit solicitor’s office, which prosecutes criminal cases in Aiken, Bamberg and Barnwell counties.
