NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. — People working in a North Augusta field came across the body of a man Sunday. Investigators from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office are working alongside the county coroner’s staff to learn how he died.

The field sits along the 100 block of Philpot Lane. The man was spotted there at 12:02 p.m., and coroner’s staff pulled up about 13 minutes later, at roughly 12:15 p.m.

According to Coroner Darryl Ables, the remains showed several stages of decomposition. His office has scheduled an autopsy in Newberry, which should establish both the cause and the manner of death.

No name has been released. The coroner’s office plans to identify the man only once his relatives have been told.

Neither agency has said whether foul play is suspected, and no other details about the man or how long he had been in the field were made public Sunday.
