AIKEN, S.C. — A traveling exhibit from the Sankofa African American Museum on Wheels opens in Aiken on Sunday, Oct. 18, with a reception from 1 to 5 p.m. at CAAHAC, the city’s center for African American history, arts and culture.

The show, titled Through the Eyes of its People, comes from a mobile museum founded in 1995 that has toured for roughly 30 years with historical papers, photos, artifacts and first-person accounts of American life.

The host center is at 120 York St. N.E., inside the historic Immanuel Institute where York Street meets Richland Avenue. Rev. W.R. Coles, a Presbyterian missionary who arrived in Aiken in 1881 to start a school and church serving people freed from slavery, put up the building in 1889.

The landmark holds a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. Restoration work began in 2004, and a full renovation finished in 2021, paid for by corporate, city, county and individual donors. The City of Aiken owns the building, and the center hosts lectures, art shows, concerts and other traveling exhibits through the year.
