AIKEN, S.C. — Young horse fans can paint a model horse of their own for free next weekend when the City of Aiken hosts Breyer Horse Day at its Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum.

The event runs from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 24. It is open at no charge to children ages 4 to 16, who must come with a parent.

Each child gets to decorate a Breyer Stablemate figure, with paint and supplies provided while they last. Door prizes and coloring books will also be handed out.

The city’s Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department is teaming up with three partners: the Aiken Volunteer Mounted Unit, Equine Rescue of Aiken and Pitter Patter Children’s Boutique. The mounted unit and the rescue group’s ambassador horse are expected to stop by.

The museum sits inside Hopelands Gardens at 135 Dupree Place SW and pays tribute to 40 champion racehorses that were conditioned on the local Aiken Training Track, a big part of why the city calls itself Thoroughbred Country.

Families who need special help to take part are asked to contact the parks office at least 48 hours ahead.
