AIKEN, S.C. — Drivers in the Augusta-Aiken region are being asked to flag where traffic backs up as the Augusta Regional Transportation Study Metropolitan Planning Organization updates its Congestion Management Process.

ARTS MPO is a federally designated agency that sets local transportation policy and decides how to spend federal planning funds across a planning area of about 806 square miles. The South Carolina portion includes parts of Aiken and Edgefield counties, including Aiken, North Augusta, New Ellenton and Burnettown.

The update fulfills federal Transportation Management Area requirements from the Federal Highway Administration and the Federal Transit Administration. The last process update was in 2021.

An Aiken County public meeting is set for Monday, Oct. 13, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Sandlapper Room at the Aiken County Government Center, 1930 University Parkway. A second meeting is scheduled Tuesday, Oct. 14, in Augusta.

Residents can also share experiences with delays and getting around the region through an online survey. ARTS MPO said responses are confidential and will be used only to inform the process.

Officials describe the Congestion Management Process as an ongoing effort to identify strategies that address congestion and improve how the region multi-modal transportation system operates and is managed.
