## Aiken County Sheriff’s Office Introduces Special Needs Awareness Stickers

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office has developed special needs awareness stickers for vehicles and residences. These stickers are intended to assist deputies during traffic stops and interactions involving individuals with autism. The initiative is a safety measure to inform deputies that they may be engaging with someone who might not respond in typical ways, according to Major Jason Griffin of the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.

The demand for these stickers has been notable; the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office initially ordered 500 stickers and needed to order an additional 500 within a week. Residents of Aiken County can obtain two stickers per family from the front desk of the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.

Amy Williams, a mother of a son on the autism spectrum and who is also neurodivergent, highlighted the critical importance of deputies understanding how to communicate with individuals with autism. While she views the stickers as a positive step, Williams suggested that additional training, connecting agencies with statewide resources, and programs such as sensory bags for first responders are also necessary to enhance safety and acceptance.
