# Democrats Urge USPS to Halt New Mail-in Ballot Restrictions

Democrats on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee are demanding that the United States Postal Service immediately stop implementing new restrictions on vote-by-mail procedures. The committee members, led by Senator Gary Peters, sent a letter to Postmaster General David Steiner and the USPS Board of Governors on September 4, warning that the changes risk disenfranchising voters and disrupting the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.

The senators contend that the Postal Service’s recently finalized rule, which requires states to provide absentee voter rolls to the federal government and adhere to new ballot standards, lacks legal authority. They argue that neither the President nor the USPS has the power to regulate absentee voting. This new rule also grants the Postal Service the authority to verify and potentially refuse to deliver ballots that do not meet its requirements.

The finalized rule, issued on August 21, is based on a vote-by-mail executive order from President Trump. The senators highlighted that the Postal Service proceeded with finalizing this rule despite being subject to a federal court order prohibiting such action and previous commitments to Congress to abide by judicial injunctions. The lawmakers also raised concerns about a whistleblower disclosure alleging that the USPS is rushing to deploy a new IT system for ballot verification without adequate testing, potentially creating failures that could lead to rejected ballots.

For Aiken County residents, particularly those who rely on mail-in voting, these national developments could have implications for how their ballots are processed. The integrity of the election process is a significant concern, and any changes to ballot handling could affect voter confidence. The Savannah River Site, a major employer in Aiken County, has a large workforce, and ensuring accessible voting for all eligible citizens, including those working at critical facilities, is paramount.

The senators emphasized that the Postal Service’s continued actions, despite warnings from Congress and court orders, could undermine public faith in the elections and cause lasting damage to the institution. They reiterated their call for the immediate reversal of the current course and the rescinding of the final rule on federal ballot mail, especially as states are in the final stages of preparing and mailing absentee ballots to voters.

Senators Maggie Hassan, Ruben Gallego, Richard Blumenthal, Elissa Slotkin, Andy Kim, and John Fetterman joined Senator Peters in sending the letter.
