# Rory McIlroy Prioritizes Family, Less PGA Tour Play

Professional golfer Rory McIlroy recently indicated a decreasing interest in playing most PGA Tour events as his career progresses. Following his third round at the Tour Championship in Atlanta, McIlroy, now 37, stated that his enthusiasm for attending every course has diminished, leading him to consider reducing his schedule further.

McIlroy, a prominent figure in recent PGA Tour changes and negotiations, expressed that he has participated in events he did not necessarily want to attend out of a sense of obligation. He emphasized his desire to spend more time with his family and take breaks from competition, noting that playing three consecutive weeks, as he did in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, is now his limit. He also affirmed he would not play four straight weeks in the future, attributing his shorter fuse to his 18th or 19th year as a professional.

The professional golf landscape has seen significant shifts, partly due to the emergence of the LIV Golf Tour. In response, the PGA Tour implemented changes such as signature events with higher purses and no-cut tournaments to retain top players. While these signature events offered increased prize money, some smaller tournaments experienced reduced participation as golfers opted for rest. McIlroy suggested that the PGA Tour’s structure before LIV Golf’s arrival was effective, but the new competition necessitated increased prize funds and smaller fields to retain talent.

With the PGA Tour facing more aggressive changes under new CEO Brian Rolapp, McIlroy’s comments highlight a potential challenge for the tour. His reduced playing schedule, focusing on major championships and the FedEx Cup Playoffs, could impact the tour’s ability to attract high-dollar sponsors, given his status as one of the sport’s biggest draws.
