# New Film ‘By Any Means’ Explores Civil Rights Era Violence

A new action thriller, ‘By Any Means,’ starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Mark Wahlberg, opens in theaters on September 4. The film delves into the racial and political unrest of the American South in the late 1960s, offering a propulsive and unvarnished look at the era.

Directed by Elegance Bratton and written by Sascha Penn, ‘By Any Means’ centers on an unlikely pairing: a young, by-the-book Black FBI agent, Wayne Strider, portrayed by Abdul-Mateen II, and a jaded New York Mafia hitman, Gregory Scarpa, played by Wahlberg. The narrative explores the deep racial and cultural divides of the time, particularly in the context of law enforcement and the Ku Klux Klan.

The movie is based on true events, drawing inspiration from the real-life figure of Gregory Scarpa, an FBI informant who was enlisted to help solve the murders of civil rights workers in Mississippi. While Scarpa was a genuine informant, the character of agent Wayne Strider is a fictional composite created for the film. Abdul-Mateen II develops Strider from a cautious agent to a determined hero, while Wahlberg embodies Scarpa with a distinctive appearance, including a prosthetic nose and an ever-present toothpick.

The plot unfolds as the FBI, unable to resolve the 1966 firebombing murder of Mississippi NAACP leader Vernon Dahmer Sr., turns to Scarpa for his unconventional methods. The film depicts Scarpa operating off the books, confronting the pervasive presence of the Ku Klux Klan, particularly within law enforcement. The violence depicted is often intense, with Scarpa employing brutal tactics against Klan members.

The film also features a strong supporting cast, including Nicole Beharie as Strider’s wife, LisaGay Hamilton as a key witness, and Giancarlo Esposito as Dahmer. The production design captures the period with pastel costumes and classic chrome cars. The soundtrack enhances the historical setting with music from artists like Nina Simone, Ray Charles, Dinah Washington, and Curtis Mayfield, alongside an original title song by Diane Warren performed by the Isley Brothers and David Kushner.

A central theme of ‘By Any Means’ is the ethical dilemma of using violence as a means of justice. The contrasting approaches of the FBI agent and the hitman create significant tension, culminating in a physical confrontation between the two characters. The movie, released by Paramount Pictures, is rated R for violence, bloody images, and pervasive language. It has a running time of 107 minutes and has received a rating of three out of four stars.
