# SCDNR refers dog hunting issue to lawmakers

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) announced today, September 1, 2026, that it is concluding its inquiries into dog hunting, determining that the matter requires legislative action rather than departmental intervention. The SCDNR had conducted a series of public hearings across the state to gather information regarding hunting deer with dogs.

In a public statement, the SCDNR expressed appreciation for the participation of hunters, landowners, conservationists, and other citizens who engaged in the department’s information-gathering process. The information collected during these hearings indicated that the primary concerns surrounding dog hunting involve private property rights, hunting traditions, enforcement, evolving land use, and the relationships between landowners and hunters. These issues were identified as social and legal in nature, rather than biological or natural resource management concerns.

Given that potential changes addressing these concerns would necessitate legislative action, the SCDNR has decided to refer the issue to the General Assembly for further consideration. The department will immediately conclude its inquiries, meetings, and surveys related to this topic. A summary of the information received will be maintained.

Once the SCDNR Board approves a final report, it will be provided to the General Assembly. The existing statutory framework for dog hunting remains in effect, and the SCDNR will continue to enforce current laws within its authority.
