# Coach Raises Player Safety Concerns After Uncalled Hit

Nation Ford High School head football coach Jake Bentley voiced significant concerns regarding player safety after a late hit on one of his players went unpenalized during the team’s season opener on Friday, August 22, 2026. The incident occurred in a non-region game where Gilbert High School defeated Nation Ford 21-14.

The play in question happened in the third quarter when Nation Ford’s Asher Beck scored a 43-yard touchdown, tying the game at 14. After Beck had crossed the goal line and was celebrating with teammates, a Gilbert defender delivered a late hit. Despite the clear timing of the hit well after the play concluded, officials did not throw a flag. Coach Bentley stated that the referee later explained the hit was not deemed malicious, therefore no penalty was applied.

Bentley emphasized that his concern was not about the game’s final score, but rather the implications for player safety and the accountability of officials in such situations, especially when a player is clearly out of the play. The Gilbert Indians secured their lead with a 35-yard touchdown pass with 14 seconds left in the third quarter, and no further scoring occurred in the fourth.

The matchup featured two programs from different parts of South Carolina. Nation Ford, established in 2007 in Fort Mill, has approximately 1,900 students and moved from Class 5A to Class 4A this season. Gilbert High School, founded in 1876 and located over 100 miles away, enrolls about 1,000 students and dropped from Class 4A to Class 3A. These schools do not typically share a region, making this crossover game a rare occurrence. This game marked Bentley’s first official loss as a high school head coach, having taken over the Nation Ford program in January 2025.
