# Furman welcomes largest freshman class in a decade

Furman University welcomed its largest freshman class in a decade on August 20, as more than 700 first-year students moved into campus dorms. The university community, including athletic teams, ROTC, and cheer squads, assisted new students with the move-in process, aiming to foster immediate connections.

The Class of 2030’s arrival was designed to be a smooth transition, with volunteers helping families transport belongings into residence halls. This support allowed new students and their families to focus on settling in rather than the physical demands of moving.

Stephen Jones, a new student from Memphis, Tennessee, expressed excitement about meeting new people and pursuing a dual-degree in applied physics and engineering. His father, Steve Jones, noted the efficiency of the move-in process. Stephen’s mother, Vicky Jones, appreciated the attention her son received during tours and orientation, which assured her of his well-being at the university.

Olivia Marsh, another incoming student, looked forward to face-to-face interactions with professors after experiencing many online classes in high school. She also plans to join the equestrian team. Sarah Iqbal, a resident assistant from the Class of 2028, aimed to provide a supportive experience for the new students, similar to the positive impact her own RA had on her.

Curtis Nash, assistant dean and director of Housing and Residence Life, emphasized that move-in day is about more than just unpacking. The goal is for students to begin forming relationships with roommates, floormates, and RAs, creating a sense of belonging within the Furman community. Staff are focused on developing environments where students feel welcomed, seen, and connected.
