**Most home burglaries take less than ten minutes** — and most are crimes of opportunity, not the result of careful planning. The single most effective deterrent isn’t a high-end alarm system. It’s a few easy habits that make your home look harder to hit than your neighbor’s.

### 1. Lock the door you forget

The most common entry point for residential break-ins in South Carolina isn’t a forced window — it’s an unlocked side door, garage entry, or sliding patio door. Every single time you leave, even for ten minutes, check three: front, back, garage.

### 2. Make the front look lived-in

Mail pile-up, unwatered plants on the porch, and dark windows at 9 PM all signal “nobody home.” If you travel, set two lamps on indoor smart plugs with a sunset-to-10pm schedule, ask a neighbor to grab packages, and put the trash bin out and back on collection day.

### 3. Trim the burglar’s hiding spots

Shrubs taller than three feet under windows give an intruder cover. Trim them down. Same for any tree branch within climbing range of a second-story window or balcony.

### 4. Light the dark seams

Motion-activated lights at the side gate, back patio, and garage cost less than $30 each and run on solar in most South Carolina yards. Nobody wants to be lit up in someone else’s driveway.

### 5. Don’t broadcast your absence

Wait until you’re *home* from vacation to post photos. Real-time vacation posts are a public schedule for anyone watching your social feeds.
