A view of the Persimmons Ridge Fire as it spreads through the landscape.
Residents in Greenville and Pickens Counties are facing urgent evacuations as the South Carolina Forestry Commission responds to the rapidly escalating Persimmons Ridge Fire. The fire has breached containment lines and expanded to over 1,553 acres with 0% containment, fanned by strong winds. An evacuation center has been established, and health precautions are advised due to smoke hazards. Governor Henry McMaster is expected to provide updates on the emergency response as firefighting efforts continue.
Residents of Greenville and Pickens Counties are facing an alarming situation as the South Carolina Forestry Commission has announced immediate evacuations due to rapidly escalating wildfires in the area. The decision comes in the wake of the Persimmons Ridge Fire, which has breached containment lines, dangerously fanned by strong winds.
For those not familiar, the areas affected by the evacuations include the Oil Camp area and Cliff Ridge subdivision. Detailed maps outlining evacuation zones can be easily accessed on the South Carolina Forestry Commission’s Facebook page. For those needing a place to go, an evacuation center has been set up at the Marietta First Baptist Church, located at 2936 Geer Hwy, Marietta SC 29661. Safety is the priority, and residents are urged to comply and find safe locations immediately.
The Persimmons Ridge Fire, located southeast of the scenic Caesars Head State Park, has already expanded to more than 1,553 acres and remains at a concerning 0% containment. Adding to the chaos, strong winds and downed timber remnants from Hurricane Helene are making it increasingly difficult for emergency crews to manage the fire’s rapid growth.
Currently, around 148 firefighters along with various firefighting resources are on the ground battling the flames. They are employing helicopters and other aerial support to combat the blaze, but visibility issues are causing delays in optimal operations. Chainsaw crews are busy clearing timber to help bulldozers create necessary firebreaks, focusing on the eastern side where the terrain is more forgiving.
It’s worth noting that the Table Rock Fire in Pickens County has reached a staggering 4,556 acres as well and is also at 0% containment. These incidents have led to a statewide burning ban, which means that all outdoor burning—including campfires and bonfires—is officially prohibited.
The smoke generated from these fires poses a health risk to residents, especially those with respiratory concerns. The City of Greenville has recommended keeping windows and doors closed and limiting outdoor activities as much as possible during air quality alerts. If you need assistance with your pets during this time, the Cleveland Park Animal Hospital is offering free boarding for animals evacuated due to the wildfires. It’s a heartwarming effort during an otherwise stressful situation.
Looking ahead, Governor Henry McMaster will be holding a press briefing to provide updates on state responses and firefighting efforts. As efforts continue to stabilize the situation, authorities are encouraging residents to stay away from evacuation areas to ensure their own safety as well as to allow emergency responders clear access to the fires.
Residents in affected communities looking for more information can reach out to the Table Rock Complex Information Line at 864-467-3428. As this wildfire situation develops, staying informed and prepared is the best way to navigate these troubling times.
